Becoming A Nurse A Child Growing Up - 2008 Words
My Journey to Becoming a Nurse As a child growing up, I often felt like a gypsy because my mother moved just about every year. I have attended over ten public schools from the first grade through the twelfth grade. I was born in Baltimore, Maryland at City Hospital, which is now known as Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. I am the oldest of two children and I was raised by my mother; my father was absent from my life. Later, my mother told me that he was an alcoholic and my child support was $25 a week and we were lucky to get that. Like all children who saw their relatives from time to time, I was always asked what I wanted to be when I grow up. My reply was always the same, ââ¬Å"a nurseâ⬠I would say enthusiastically and without hesitation, and then when asked why I would say, ââ¬Å"I love taking care of sick people.â⬠I thought nursing was just about taking care of sick people and giving them medicine to make them feel better but I have since discovered that giving medicine is a very sma ll part of nursing. Assessing, educating, and being an advocate plays a major role in nursing. Despite moving around my entire childhood, I graduated from Lake Clifton/Eastern High School with the distinction of being 8th in my graduating class.
